The Canadian rodeo community is mourning the loss of Dusty LaValley, a four-time Canadian Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) Bareback Riding Champion and Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer, who passed away on August 2, 2026, at the age of 45 following a courageous, years-long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Dusty, born on May 30, 1981, leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of Canada’s most accomplished bareback riders. Throughout his distinguished career, he became known not only for his exceptional talent inside the arena but also for his determination, sportsmanship, and unwavering character.
LaValley enjoyed tremendous success on the professional rodeo circuit, competing in 13 Canadian Finals Rodeos (CFR) and capturing CPRA Bareback Riding championships in 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011. His accomplishments extended beyond Canada as he also qualified twice for the prestigious National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in 2008 and 2010, competing against the world’s top bareback riders.
His contributions to the sport earned him induction into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, cementing his place among the greatest competitors in Canadian rodeo history.
In recent years, Dusty faced one of life’s greatest challenges after being diagnosed with ALS. Despite the devastating effects of the progressive neurological disease, he continued to inspire family, friends, fellow competitors, and fans with his courage, resilience, and determination.
